Cathedraal plant bouwmateriaal voor volgende generaties

“About 3,000 oak trees have been planted to help maintain Lincoln Cathedral’s roof timbers in the future.

The wood in Aisthorpe was the idea of a local family who have dedicated it for the sole use of the cathedral.

The Dean of Lincoln, the Very Reverend Philip Buckler, said the trees would be ready in a few hundred years.

He said: “It’s essential for us to look forward and have wood ready for whenever we need to replace a bit of timber.”

Mr Buckler added: “We never know whether wood damage or beetle damage might cause a particular piece of wood to be replaced.

“We’ve got to have sufficient wood available to meet such emergencies and in the longer term to plan for changing where necessary.”

It costs about £3m a year to run the 900-year-old building, which attracts about 180,000 visitors a year.”
